11+, 13+, GCSE and A-Level Tutors in Sheffield
Over my many years of experience in teaching I have seen the same obstacles stand in the way of exam success time and time again and I and my team have the expertise to address these barriers:
All subjects
- Lacking confidence in ability. In all cases I have found this self-perception to be mistaken – exam success comes most readily to students who feel confident in their ability.
- Not knowing how to score bonus points. Mark schemes for all exam boards allow for additional marks which can make the difference of a whole grade.
- Not knowing how to revise. Effective revision depends on efficient techniques to absorb and retain the required information quickly and reliably.
- The mental block of “being really bad at maths” or “really bad at languages”. Working sequentially and taking small steps and intensive practice are key to overcoming this.
English and essay-writing subjects
- Lacking enthusiasm for the set texts in the case of English Literature and generally. In my experience this is often simply because the text has not yet been ‘brought alive’. A degree of enthusiasm is invaluable for identifying with the text and characters and unlocking ideas that will result in outstanding essays.
- Not knowing where to start when writing essays. Good grades can’t be achieved without good essay-writing skills, yet these skills are often not taught in schools due to time constraints on teachers.
- Lacking experience of essay writing. Writing great essays is a skill that to most students does not come automatically, yet is easy to improve through practice and feedback. Again, pressure on teachers often means that many students have few essays marked in school and as a result are unaware of how their technique can be improved.
I have developed an approach that addresses all of the above issues and have trained my team of tutors to follow certain steps that facilitate our students’ learning. Using these techniques we have improved the results of some students by two grades at A-level and three grades at GCSE.
